‘The Destined Dream’…….

..And WE are back!!-Yes! Dears once again meeting you'll with yet another anecdote..right from the 'Miraculous Manuscript' of Ma!!!!:

Vengadanathan was born in the year, 1581 in Bhuvanagiri, as the third son of Thimanna Pattar and Gopikambal. He had his early stints of ‘Gurukula Vaasam’ under his father-and later on under the divine tutelage of Sri Suseendra Theerthar.

Vengadanathan’s radiance and the lustre of his brilliance had all made his Guru Sri Suseendra Theerthar-the Head of the “Dvaitha Mutt” in Kumbakonam- to place this wise disciple of his.. at the helm of the affairs of the mutt after his times!!

However, circumstances forced Vengadanathan to return to his native with the death of his father; at the same time he kept alive his thirst for ‘Shastriya Wisdom’ by fuelling himself with all that he could lay his hands on..alongside lessons in playing the VEENA!

He also was married by the elders in his community...as was the custom those days.

But young Vengadanathan’s mind and heart was always brimming with the desire to get back to Kumbakonam..not to assume head..but more so to serve his Guru.

Within a few days he also left for his ‘Destination’!

His Guru, Sri Suseendra Theerthar who was in his last days..once again voiced out his wish of Vengadanathan assuming the divine head of the Mutt. But being married now….Vengadanathan, was in a sheer dilemma whether to fulfill his Guru’s wish…or to go against it!!!!

That night he fell asleep as he was deeply thinking of the same:
Around four in the morning, he witnessed a dream, wherein he saw a flash of LIGHT pervading the Horizon….

*A Beautiful and Radiant ‘DIVA’-an Epitome of Compassion had ‘sat there’….clasping Her Veena in one hand..the Vedas..and the ‘Aksharamala’, in the others!!!

Vengadanathan was jolted out of his wits..as he heard the most Mellifluous Voice ever uttering words of a serene wisdom to him:-
"*I was created by Sri Veda Vyasa to protect the scholars. I was brought up by Sri Aananda Theerthar and Sri Jaya Theerthar.

Sri Vyasa Raya and Sri Vijayeendra Theerthar had given me strength; while, Sri Suseendra Theerthar had crowned and given me a throne!!

*I have a Haven built, in Veda Vyasa's "Brahma Sutra", Vyasa Raya's "Taatparya Chandrika" and "Swaya Mitra". Sri Vijayeendra Theerthar ‘Draped’ me with some Splendid Finery- "Madhvaadva Khantodharam.
*His "Tatva Manikya Peti" adorns my hands….while His "Nyaya Muktha Mala" …my neck..
Sri Vyasa Raya's "Tarka Thandavam" adorns my Throne..!!”

*”Vengadanatha, all these scriptures WILL Exist as long as the Moon and Sun would. Atleast for this “Tarka Thandavam” alone,- I shall exist in this world till the end of this Kalpa(4.32 billion years)…”

And suddenly Her Face going pale:
"…But I haven't sensed "Nyaya Sudha" and "Tarka Chandrika" yet…
You are the ‘Chosen One’ Vengadanatha to unveil their beauty to me….”

*”You are born for a cause in this world and that cause is to save Humanity. This is your duty, Vengadanatha!!
If you assume Sanyasa and perform the ‘Moola Ramar Pooja’ daily- I will never leave you my Son”!!!!

*"If you do not…then the ‘Analysing of Scriptures’---will come to a halt!

The Vaishnavaite culture will perish…
Even if the scriptures exist, there would not be a single soul to understand them…

All the Mutts will get shattered…and one will not hear the Intellectual Debates of Scholars around that place…

This should never happen. You should definitely assume Sanyasa and I will stay with you forever my son!!!!
This is the truth and this will happen!"

*Thus Voicing out the Goddess, disappeared into thin air…It was like one long dream of hallucinations for Vengadanathan..for whom..now his confusions..seemed to have vanished!!

Why will his confusions not vanish?!-When it was ‘Saatchath Saraswathi Ma’ who had cleared them;-and also named him,-‘Sri Raghavendra Theerthar’!!!!

A letter to the Goddess!!!!

Ma You have left me keep wondering....as to what would have been the good deed in my past..that has culminated into having become an object of Your Incessant Love?!?!!
Whoever, was I ,in my previous birth or would be in the forthcoming, this One Janma will remain outstanding and magnificent unto the edifice of my Soul....

for this is the birth where I live with You literally.

Borrowing Tennyson’s lines:
{‘..men may come and men may go,
But I go on forever.’}
Let anybody enter my life and exit,
But You are always there for me Ma!!!!

Ma, people at times tend to make fun about this ‘craze’ for You..some even think there’s something “attached” to my prayers to You????

Go! tell them Ma that this devotee of Yours is clean in her heart and prays out of her Love and obsession for You!!

All said and done, I Know You & You Know Me Ma.
You were the One who’d been with me through my thick and thin; who had put up with my odds, my weird eccentricity and at times, even stupidity!!

Where were they at that time?
We’ve been travelling together in this journey, where most of my times You’ve been CARRYING me!

My only plea to You my dear Ma, after my demise –whenever it happens- Stay with me, aid me in reaching Your Lotus Feet without any glitch!

As the last Verse of ‘SagalaKala Valli Malai’goes:
“Padaippon Mudalam Vinkanda Deivam
Palkodi Undenum,
Vizhambir Un Por Kankanda Deivam {enakku} Ullatho ?! »
Thanks for everything My Kanamma!!!!!!
Luv,
Saras.

A Date With My Deity.......

Just went on an ‘Imagining –Spree’ on how would the Abode of my Goddess be??
-derived something which might appear sheepish to you as well!?

*According to me SHE, an embodiment of a ‘serene beauty’, would be ensconced in a never-to-fade lotus..whose very sight would heal even the sinners of sinner!!

*She being worshipped also in the riverine form, would surely be having a ‘Kalasam’ of nectar..it’s one drop, suffice to quench the worst of the hunger.

*White symbolising purity..will She have Her walls painted by the brush of ‘Mercy’, with those enticing swans forming a marvellous backdrop?!

*Vedic reverberations from the Rig, Sama, Yajur & Atharva in full swing, will be accompanied by the mellifluous strains of ‘showers of music’!!!

*Those chiming peals of laughter arising from Her toe’s anklets are enough to tell this world, how enigmatic Her smile would be then!!

*Love and nothing but love as Her forte, ---- even the learned of the Scholars would simply go to an oblivion..blinking at what would these terms mean:-’hatred ‘and ‘anger’?!?!

Obvious when always surrounded by such Innocent Bliss just think, how wonderful it would be for me to have this abode for my final destination!!!!!!

Go on cherish Her..calling “Saraswathima, “Saraswathima” in all your minds..take my words, you’ll be definitely ANSWERED.

‘Coz SHE IS ULTIMATE AND INFINITE MAGIC.

A Rendezvous with the Goddess....

There's this yet another amusing anecdote -showing the 'Magnificent Obsession' of the Goddess with Her ardent Devotee(s):-

..That day He got up early as usual, even before the first rays of the Sun could kiss the soft feet of 'Mother Earth'! He-after completing his morning rituals, inclusive of a fervent pooja, sat before the writing-desk to resume the devotional verses on his Goddess!

'He' was none other than the Poet-Supremo Kalidasa!!
Just in a few minutes his bosom friend and a magnanimous person at heart, entered Kalidasa's home. With a host of persons accompanying him, he entered with an air of elegance. He was so close to Kalidasa in all aspects ..that Kalidasa would never ever deny any of his requests...

But, this one was quite strange:
The friend wanted Kalidasa to write an 'Elegy' on Him!
Kalidasa least expected this kind of a whimsical desire from the kind lad;.'coz elegies are written only for the dead & departed!??!
But who would have the guts to deny, when the plea was put forward by a charismatic personality as King Bhojaraja!

Still, with a degree of hesitancy, Kalidasa went ahead--
He sang such a beautiful elegy, with each of the verses highlighting the multi-dimensional facets of the great King. All in all, Kalidasa's elegy was akin to a beautiful garland strewn of various, multi-hued, fragrant blossoms!!

Kalidasa's words were sung out of pure and overwhelming Love....for his friend's 'Death'?!
Now who resides in his tongue?
-saatchath 'Devi Saraswathi(ma).
Then how will the elegy become false?-King Bhojaraja at first fell unconscious and then DIED!!!
The Poet Supremo realized everything..and pleaded with Goddess Saraswathi to 'bring' his friend back.

Though it was against the law of nature 'She' did not want to see Her favourite devotee, standing before the King's body and sobbing like a child anymore. She 'brought back' the King alive...who got up fresh as if from a trance!!

The three-by-fourth minutes that the King was 'dead'-Kalidasa sang moving verses to Goddess Saraswathi..which even today stands as a master-piece in the world of devotional Literature..by the name,
"Bhojasambu".

Nandana....

I’m an ardent fan of the ‘Chinna Kuyil’ Chitra.
The recent demise of her nine-year old daughter, Nandana has wiped off that radiant smile, that waas enough to light up a dark tunnel!!!
This, a translated version of one of Chitraji’s melodies- ’Poove Poo Chooda Vaa’-is a pure dedication to her:

*My dainty blossom ..come down to ring in some ecstasy into my heart??

Aren’t you aware that I keep looking at the door-step every moment ...for your arrival!

My eyes no longer have the power to open their lids!!!

*O! dear when my soul was beginning to wane down on it's lustre…

You were the one who breezed in, as a ghee and lit up all the ‘Lamps of my Soul’!!

But..today has this gentle breeze, that wafts across all the other house-holds ..forgotten mine????

*Let the times crumble; or the appearances wither;

But the Love for each other ,can never ever diminish!!

Does not gold get to retain it's pure self,-whether being put under water or fire??

I see myself in the Golden radiance’of your memories..

Why did not my life end... seeing the glowing countenance of yours?!

(Nandana)
I pray God to bring you into my life….again as a daughter in all our forth-coming births,
To love you with my heart all over again and again ......

-a tribute.

Mirror..mirror.. On the wall.

All of us must have heard of this fairy—tale query from “Snow White”:
’Mirror, mirror on the wall,

Who’s the fairest of all’?

Well! For a change..shall we try asking the same mirror, who is a true Human being among all:

The world is our mirror. The good that we find in others, is in us too.. and the faults that we find in others are our faults as well!

Coming to think of it, if we give to others, we actually give to ourselves.

Coz….
*When we appreciate beauty we too become beautiful.

*When we admire creativity, we too tend to be creative.

*When we love we are in turn loved.

* When we seek to understand, we get understood in the bargain.

*When we listen, our voice is also heard.

*When we teach, we learn as well….

..So, ultimately when we start seeing the best in others, the best in us also being seen by others!!

So..Come let the journey begin!

May be our destination seems a little too far; nevertheless....we are destined to reach the destination of being a great human!!!!!

Mirror mirror on the wall....

The story of the Twin Poets.. The twin poets..ardent devotees of the 'Vagdevi' poured their woes to the Goddess ..tears bordering their cheeks....the next day had dawned. The brothers wondered why the day had ever dawned..in a few minutes they would be summoned before the Chozha King..and what would be the consequences..????--all this kept running in their minds!!!!

Pure devotion may not have it's effects immediately..but surely in the long run it stands in good stead during a crisis:
Pennaiyaaru in those days was a fertile river surrounded by verdant greenery..not just that, it also shared 'Divine Limelight'..thanks to the THIRUVAMAATHUR Shivan temple located on it's banks!!

Two brothers who were known for their mastery in poetry--'Rettai Pulavargal' {Twin Poets}were on a pilgrimage to various Shivan temples....finally reached  the Thirumavamaathur Sthalam!

On seeing the Charismatic, serene countenance of Lord Shiva, the twin poets were literally in tears ..as if the 'Piraisoodan' (the Lord who wears the Moon in His Head) had been waiting for them!!!!
With the passing of time, the local people..along with the courtesans from the Chozha King's court started thronging the temple premises!

In the overwhelming devotional pursuit ..the 'Twin Poets' started compiling verse after verse....
--one of the verses carried the geographical location of the Shrine ..as situated on the upper banks of  the river Pennaiyaaru!!!

..while..in reality, the Shrine was actually located in the lower banks!!

The Chieftain among the courtesans got wild at this blunder ordered his soldiers to bring the 'pulavargal' to the palace; The twin poets, who were taken to the palace were ordered to wait for the King's return from his voyage..he was expected to be there the next morning.

However, they refused to give up their stand; they firmly believed and told the the Chozha King thus:-
"Engal Naavil Ulla Naamagal Puranchollal"!!
{ The Vagdevi who resides in our tongues will not utter a lie"!!}

And what a conviction they had..for their words i.e. the words of the Vagdevi who resides in their tongues came out to be TRUE:
..the Pennaiyaaru river had changed it's course of flow owing to heavy showers and consequential floods the previous night!!!!!

Even today you can see the  THIRUVAMAATHUR Shivan temple 'seated' happily on the upper bank of river Pennaiyaaru.

Doesn't this clearly show that Saraswathima would do anything to save Her devotees from a crisis?!?!!

How To Embrace Her!!..

SARASWATHI MA..
Where could I see You????

Hm....in the 'Chandra mandalam' .. the 'Surya Mandalam'?!

They say You are embedded within the infinite stars in the
celestial sky..??

They say You live only in the tongues of  learned Scholars..!

Some vouch for the fact ..that You can be accessible only if you
recite the Vedas..without fail, the Goddess in Her abode will
respond to you immediately!!"

...ha..ha..ha..ha!!
How naive there....
humbug ...humbug!!!

*ONE CAN SEE HER RESIDING IN THE INNOCENT
SMILE OF A CHILD,

**ONE CAN FEEL HER IN EACH AND EVERY NERVE OF
HER ARDENT DEVOTEE,

***ONE CAN HEAR HER IN EVERY NOTE OF A MELODY
SUNG,

****ONE CAN EVEN TOUCH AND 'RELISH' HER IN PURE
GESTURES,

*****ONE CAN BE WITH HER IF WE LOVE HER WITH ALL
OUR HEART!!!!!

'My Cutie-Pies'!!

I am the Mother of 24 loving kids!!!

Wondering??**--Yeah! I am talking about those irresistible kids for whom,
 I am the Class-teacher! :

·             Funny and mischievous…

·             Cute & Ravishing ‘Silent-Killers’…

·             Sometimes annoying…

·             Sometimes make one go crazy!!?!

·             Caring…when I’m low and dejected; -they would never leave me until I break into peals of laughter, with their ‘kadi jokes’!

·             Soft—Hearted… (Except that they tend to go barbaric, on having a trespasser into their class!!

·             Magnanimous…’coz often they generously ‘sacrifice’ their class-work notes;--until Mrs.Vineeta, the H.M. pulls them for checking!!

·             Tolerant… (?!)—but don’t ask me about their ‘Special Violent Spells’, if someone talks ill about their class!

----All said and done, my children are Adorable.

Now, their valuable comment about me:-
“Ma’am is a grown-up child!

Well! What to do?-Sometimes ‘Motherly Affection’ springs out from such a grown-up child!!!!

Fine! Jokes apart these 24 bubbly, vivacious ‘Cutie-Pies’, have made my stint of teaching career..meaningful.

BAAMATHI

Yet again thanking my Goddess I write about one of her stoic devotees: Vaasasbathi Michrar.

Michrar's only passion, pursuit and penchant in his life....was in penning down verses on the Goddess!!
That evening as usual, when he was giving the final touches to the verses in his manuscript...the lamp's flame-that was placed on his writing-desk-flickered in the strongly blowing-breeze and finally got put-out.

In a few seconds, an old lady appeared with a lamp in her hand. She placed it so carefully..so as to not disturb his thought-flow!!
Michrar was startled and so touched by the lady's act: "Who are you dear lady?? It is so nice of You to have given me a lamp to carry on with my work."

The 'lady' was shocked to hear these words..as she was none other than Baamathi, his wife!

She looked at her husband, Michrar, in a reverential way and uttered these words:-
"Dear Sir, I happen to be your wife, Baamathi....it's been fifty long years since I got married to you..."
At this juncture..Michrar unconsciously touched himself..his hands and face and was surprised to feel the wrinkles of old age;-
"I did not want to even give you the slightest of disturbance..all these years....as you were involved in Divine and Celestial!!!!
I was quietly rendering service to you..as  you were offering your services to the great Goddess of Wisdom, Saraswathima"--said Baamathi to her husband.

Michrar went through a gamut of emotions and  was looking at his wife keenly for the very first time..
He got up from his desk ..and folded his hands in reverence to his wife, Baamathi...who has actually done a greater service to the Goddess than him.

That's how came about the volume, 'BAAMATHI", --an Invocation to the Muse of Learning,-- that Michrar had named after his wife.

....So, meet you again with more of the Goddess' Leelai....next Wednesday.

Saathamuthu for the Soul......

Dear friends,
Starting today..with the blessings of my Goddess..I'm bringing out an exclusive episode on Her..every Wednesday!!
Need your support and encouragement on the same.

KAMBAR'S  DATE WITH THE DEITY!!
All of us know about the greatness of Kavichakravarthy Kambar, whose 'Magnum Opus',  'Kamba Ramayana' is appreciated world-wide for the colourfulness of its poetry and its religious value....

But little do we know how he too..that impeccable poet-laureate too had committed a blunder?!:-
Kambar who normally executes mastery over the word-interplay of what is called as the 'virutham' (tempo) and the 'santham' (tune)..by mistake, had used 'THUMI' instead of the word, 'THULI'....which means a droplet!!

This--while he was staging his verses before the Chola king  in the full-fledged court of ministers and other poet-laureates, was made an issue,by his arch-rivals..the other poets!
These 'pulavargal' (poets) who always envied him, saw it as a ripe opportunity to insult Kambar before the Chola king.

The magnanimous Chola king, however intervened and told the agitated members of the court, "Stop arguing ..I know Kambar ..Let's have the issue discussed tomorrwow".

That night was almost a sleepless one for Kambar..who was wriggling in the bitter memories of the day!!!

However the next day..both the king and Kambar went for their usual stroll;

In their enthusiastic bouts of  talk..they had gone almost to the outskirts of the kingdom!! Having walked for a long distance, both the king and Kambar grew thirsty...the king looked around and spotted the thatched roof of a neatly-constructed hut. It was supposed to be the 'Idaiyar theru' i.e. an exclusive street where milk and curd vendors dwell!

Kambar saw a milk-maid, churning curds in a mud-pot..sitting at the entrance of the thatched hut; he asked her for some water. The milk-maid went inside her hut and brought two tall glasses of water and offered them.As the king and Kambar were drinking the water....
The milk-maid looked at them and told, "Thayir Thumi mele therithu vidum, vilagi nilungal"!!!!
{Move aside and stand, as I churn the curds a few droplets might get scattered on to you'll.}

The king shocked on hearing the same word which was under dispute in his court yesterday..asked the maid about the meaning of the word she had used.

She laughed at the king and replied, "Don't you know,  it means a droplet?  You have such learned poets in your court ..don't they all know it's meaning ..or haven't they told you about it????"

Kambar was extremely shocked ..as heart-of-hearts he knew that such a word never existed!?!?

The next moment..neither was the neatly thatched hut there....nor was the 'milk-maid'  there!!

I don't think I need to make it explicit that it was 'saatchath' Goddess Saraswathi Herself.....who had taken an avatar of a milk-maid to defend her lovable devotee, Kambar!!!!!

The Bond!!!!

Just wanted to share this strange coincidence with you'll:
I've been going "Down the memory lane to Ooty" for the past 2 weeks.

Similar to this week's post about the elephant calfs and the ever-protective mother-elephants....I  happened to see an article in the Tamil newspaper, "Dina Thanthi". {see below}

Not just this!!
The same day when I was surfing the channels of the T.V. channels....I happened to see a movie, which  revolves round the hero's desperate effort to unite the mother-elephant and her 'cutie pie'....
In another couple of days I  had a strange dream :
I am chased by a  single-tusker!!!!
And would you believe the mammal did not harm me; instead threw  a garland on me.
Before I could come to terms with what next....

(bonk) a nice thud on my head....my brother (my chella villain!) "Shammu, there's somebody at the door asking for you"....

I combed the messed up hair..and got out to see:
"Amma inaikku varamudiyaatham ma..avangalukku udambu sariyillai" (Mam, my mom is not well ..she asked me to tell you that she can't come for todays' work).
--that was my servant-maid's son.

After nodding my head in the still-sleepy vague mood..I went down the stairs to get the milk packets..the boy was going back to his home. I was thoughtfully looking at the way he was walking..and then came inside.

Ah! wait..there was this something familiar I had seen.
What was it...yes! I got it..he was wearing a T-shirt which had a cartoon image of an elephant!!!!

The cartoon image

What do you say for all this?

But please don't ever ask about all these to my 'chella villain'..i.e. my bro. For his interpretation is :
'Neeyum oru annakutti pola irukkradhinale un mela andha aanaigaluku oru parivu thaan!"  (rant)

(since you too resemble an elephant-calf ...may be the elephants like you so much.)

Anyways catch up with me in 'Hairpin bend -3'.
Love,
Saras

Muse of all learning!!

It's an unceasing passion to talk about a 'Magnificent Obsession' - who rules over my life at all times:

Goddess Saraswathi!

The influence SHE has o'er me is inevitable and inimitable.

The Love shown by HER is immeasurable.

The knowledge SHE gives is cathartic.

The limelight that comes through HER is irreproachable.

The mercy SHE exudes is irretrievable.

Celebrating SARASWATHI  is in fact another way of celebrating womanhood..as she is one among the "TRIUMVIRATE SHAKTHI".

Coming to talk about Shakthi it's in actuality an inexhaustible form of energy.-
A  blazing fire which serves to REPLENISH  and  RESURRECT each and every soul across the globe!!
Let's take a glimpse of the three ruling deities whose "Divine Conglomeration" is Shakthi:

                   Simhaneehwari ....popularly known as DURGA.

                     Sreemaharajni....popularly known as LAKSHMI

     Sarvalokha Janani..popularly known as  SARASWATHI.

The constant interplay between our innate seeking and the innate state of  knowledge..takes on a mystical hue in tradition in the personification of Goddess Saraswathi.

Whether in Her riverine form or 'svarupa' as SHE is exalted in the Rig Veda....or in Her 'shubhra vasana' (white attire),SHE  is the Feminine form inspiring all "Creative Energies."

So, come celebrate womanhood by celebrating Maa Saraswathi.

Pappa Kuttti

Kanamma..YOU're my life, love and ecstasy!!!!! You are the love to me , And I am the magnet to you, You are the holy books of Veda ...
